Description
Size: 225 mm.

Color: In preserved specimens brownish or yellowish, belly darker, the black peritoneum shining through. Scales pouches black. Vertical fins black.

Height 4.5-5.2, 5-5.6 in length with caudal. Head 3.88-4.32, 4.2-4.6 in length with caudal. Eye 4.1-4.5, equal to or somewhat more than snout 1.1-1.3 in convex inter orbital space. Mouth somewhat oblique. Maxillary reaching slightly beyond vertical through hind border of eye. Teeth on vomer in a rather narrow ^-shaped band, those on palatines in a much broader band. Opercular spine rather strong, pungent. Two flexible flat spines at angle of preopercle. Origin of dorsal slightly behind base of pectoral, its distance from tip of snout 3.7-3.9, 4-4.2 in length with caudal. Distance of origin of anal from base of pectoral equal to head or half length of snout shorter, and from end of snout 2.1-2.4, 2.3-2.6 in length with caudal. Ventrals equal to head without snout.

Oviparous, with oval pelagic eggs floating in a gelatinous mass.
