Description
Size: 28-34 cm.

Voice: Usually silent in winter.

Habits: Prefers reed-bordered jheels with patches of emergent vegetation.

Sexes alike. A small dark brown grebe with a slender pointed and slightly uptilted bill, white underparts and silvery white flanks. Non-breeding. In winter, distinguishable from very similar Little Grebe by blackish cap to below the eyes, mixed black and white chin and throat, and dark brown foreneck. Breeding (summer): Black head and neck, and a golden tuft, of feathers behind the eyes are the diagnostics.

Breeding season: June-July. Nest- a floating pad of weed stalks, c. 37-43 cm. across, firmly attached to the bottom. Eggs- 3-5 like the latter's but smaller.
