Size: 20 cm.

Color: In alcohol specimens silvery, with a bluish gloss and brownish above. Fins light yellow. Each lobe of caudal with two broad parallel, oblique black bands, converging posteriorly with those of the other lobe and a somewhat smaller longitudinal one on the median rays. Dorsal with a more or less distinct subterminal blackish band.

Height 2.6-3, 3.4-3.7 in length with caudal. Head 3.1-3.6, 4.2-4.5 in length with caudal. Eye 2.8-3.3, about equal to convex interorbital space. Snout somewhat shorter than, or equal to eye. Maxillary extending to below frontborder of pupil. Height of maxillary posteriorly about two fifths of eye. Twenty three to twenty six gillrakers on lower part of anterior arch. Twelve to fourteen scales between occiput and dorsal. Fifth spine of dorsal longest, equal to snout and eye or somewhat longer. Ninth spine not much longer than tenth. Third and second anal spine subequal, as long as diameter of eye. Anal reaching a little farther back than dorsal, the base of its soft portion scarcely longer than that of soft dorsal. Pectorals longer than ventrals, equal to head without snout. Ventrals equal to snout and eye or a little shorter. Ventral spine somewhat longer than eye. Least height of caudal peduncle 1.5 in its length. Caudal deeply forked, the lobes pointed. Lateral line with a very feeble curve anteriorly.
