Size: 21 cm.

Color: In preserved specimens dark brown, the fins included. In the Acronurus stage the body is longitudinally banded as in the adult of veliferum.

Height 1.4-1.6, 1.7-2 in length with caudal. Head 2.7-3.1, 3.2-3.9 in length with caudal. Eye 2.7-3.3, 2.1-2.5 in snout and a little more or less than the nearly flat inter orbital space. Profile of snout very convex, as also of lower profile of head, the mouth being produced. 12 lobate teeth in each ramus of both jaws. First dorsal spine very small, fifth longest, equal to snout and half eye. anterior rays of soft dorsal longest, seventh and following rapidly decreasing in length. First anal spine small, third longest, intermediate in length between third and fourth dorsal spines. Anterior anal rays longest, posterior rays rapidly decreasing in length, the posterior margin of the fin nearly vertical. Pectorals equal to snout and eye. Ventrals as long as snout. Caudal truncate. Scales on tail before spine with long stiff bristles, forming a brushlike patch.
