Size: 34-60 mm

Color: Rosy to light tan, head and lower sides of abdomen yellowish to silvery, tip of lower jaw brownish. Base of caudal fin with a vertical dark line.

Body moderately deep, ovate, compressed. Head 2.7-2.9 in standard length, 3.4-3.6 in total length. Depth of body 2.9-3.0 in standard length, 3.6-3.7 in total length. Eye diameter 2.5-2.7 in head, 0.5-0.6 in snout and about 0.7 in slightly convex interorbital space. Teeth small, uniserial in jaws and on palatines, and V shaped on vomer. Preopercle without spines. Maxillary reaching to below or slightly beyond middle of eye. Pectoral fin equal to or slightly shorter than head without snout. Lateral line not extending to middle of caudal fin rays.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: V, 9; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II-III, 21-22; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 15-16; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 68-74; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 6+1+16-17; gill raker count: 5+1+14-16.
