Size: 24-103 mm

Color: Pale brown, lighter below with a broad dusky brown lateral band of almost uniform width from tip of snout through eye and ending in a diffuse dark spot at caudal base just above lateral line, its lower border touching the lateral line. A brownish area on upper part of body from anterior to spinous dorsal to below base of second dorsal. Spinous dorsal dusky, upper portion of membrane between anterior 4 spines dark. Second dorsal and anal with dark sub-basal bands. Front border of second dorsal and anal brownish in large specimens. Upper and lower edges of caudal narrowly dusky. Two outer rays of ventral brownish, remainder of fin transparent. Pectoral transparent.

Head 2.5-2.7 in standard length, 3.2-3.5 in total length. Depth of body 2.8-3.0 in standard length, 3.5-3.7 in total length. Eye diameter 3.0-3.3 in head, 0.8 in snout and about 0.7 in interorbital space. Teeth in bands in jaws, vomer and palatines toothed. Serrations on the preopercle ridge stouter and longer than those on the preopercle margin. Suborbital with strong sharp spines. Maxilla extending to below middle of eye. Pectoral fin equal to postorbital part of head plus half eye diameter. Ventral fin equal to pectoral or slightly shorter.
Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: VII; number of spines and rays in the second dorsal fin: I, 9; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, 8; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 11; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 24-26; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 2+1+7.
