Description
Size: 38-41 cm.

Voice: Shrill, tchuk-tchuk.

Habits: Essentially pelagic, gregarious at roosting sites otherwise keep in small flocks, crepuscular.

Adult: Sexes alike, like other piebald (black and white) waders such as Avocet, Stilt and Oystercatcher, but with short black tern-like bill, small blackish marks on lores, and long pale grey legs. In flight, legs project well beyond tail. Juvenile: With black streaks on rear crown, dark grey (not black) back, and brownish-grey scapulars and tail.

Breeding season: It breeds from April to August in dense colonies, nesting in burrows set close together in sandy islets or dunes. Nest- The nest is an unlined chamber at the end of a burrow 100-250 cm long excavated into the sandy substrate of an island or extensive coastal dune system.

Importance:  Commercial
(Eggs and young of the species used to be collected from nesting colonies.)
Threats:  Anthropogenic
(The species is threatened by future oil spills and the potential introduction of nest predators onto breeding islands. The planting of mangrove stands over bare substrates in some areas may also reduce the availability of nest sites. )

Trophic Level:  Consumer
Prey:  Chiefly crabs, other crustacean, marine worms, mudskippers, octopus and shrimp.
