Size: 28-30 cm.

Color: In alcohol reddish or greyish above, yellow below, with five more or less pronounced longitudinal yellow bands from eye to caudal, three above lateral line, fins yellow, the spinous dorsal with a large, the soft dorsal with a small black top, the caudal with three or five longitudinal black bands on its upper lobe and three on the lower lobe.

Oblong, somewhat compressed, dorsal profile much more convex than ventral profile, depth below first dorsal 3.6 to 3.9 in length, head 3.3 to 3.6, its rostro-dorsal profile arched, steepest in the rostral part. Eye situated quite near dorsal profile, almost in middle of length of head, 4 to 4.2 in head, about equal to nearly flat inter-orbital space, much shorter than obtuse snout, its diameter going about 1.3 to 1.5 in length of snout. Mouth almost horizontal, the mandible nearly not included, maxilla reaching to below anterior third of eye, rounded and very broad posteriorly. Barbels with their basal half rigid, almost reaching hind margin of praeoperculum. Operculum with a weak spine. Scales large, ctenoid, reaching to nostrils, wanting on praeorbital. Teeth in villiform bands in jaws, on vomer in a triangular, on palatines in a slender band. Gillrakers about 12 and 5 rudimentary ones. Anterior part of first dorsal strongly elevated, the first spine minute, often inconspicuous, the third longest, about 1.3 in length of head, slightly longer than second and fourth, about one third higher than second dorsal, the distance of which from first dorsal nearly equals the length of the base of that fin. Second dorsal and anal about equally high, emarginate, their anterior lower half scaly. Pectorals 1.3-1.5 in length of head, ventrals conspicuously shorter. Caudal slightly than head.
