Size: 10-16 cm.

Color: Gray, sides silvery, very faint traces of four or five dark cross shades, top of head, lower jaw, upper portion of operculum and inner margin of praeoperculum with black dots. Upper part of first dorsal black, second dorsal with a marginal and a median black band, anal with a black median band, caudal dusky, with a median and a terminal shade made up of dark points, similar dots on pectorals and ventrals. Young specimens with an indistinct lateral blotch on the tail.

Body elongate. Height 3.2, 3.5 to almost 4 in length with caudal. Head 2.8, 3.2 in length with caudal. Eye 3.5-3.7, equal to interorbital space. Snout one half to two thirds of eye. Mouth very oblique, maxillary extending to a vertical passing between pupil and posterior edge of orbit. Teeth on vomer, palatines and jaws villiform. Vertical border of prae-operculum entire, or very finely serrated on its lower half and outer edge, more distinctly round the angle and on the outer edge of the horizontal border, there may also be a few serrations along the inner angle. First dorsal spine very small, second spine more than half of third. Third, fourth and fifth spine of equal length, somewhat less than snout and eye. Second dorsal much higher than first one, the longest rays one third diameter of eye longer than postorbital part of head. Height of anal between that of first and second dorsal and equal to length of pectorals and of ventrals. Caudal rounded or subtruncate. Scales thin and easily displaced.
Dorsal spines (total): 8-8, Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-9, Anal spines: 2, Anal soft rays: 8. It has as luminous organs on the thorax and abdomen which contain luciferin obtained from Cypridina plankton.

Dioecious, external fertilization, bearers, external brooders, mouthbrooders, distinct pairing during courtship and spawning.
