Description
Size: 27.5-40 cm.

Color: Silvery grey with blue iridescence dorsally, silvery white ventrally; upper part of gill cover with a dusky black spot; fins pale yellow.

Body oblong and strongly compressed. Head large, nearly 1/3rd of standard length. Mouth large and oblique. Teeth are small. A pair of small, sharp canine teeth is present in front of each jaw. Height about 2.8, head about 3 in length, eye more or less than 3.5 in head, equal to convex interorbital space and twice or something less in snout. Maxillary about twice in head, reaching to middle of eye or hind border of pupil. Third dorsal spine the longest, soft dorsal highest anteriorly, equalling nearly first dorsal and half height of body. Ventrals half length of pectorals. For other characters see those of the family. Body is covered with small medium-sized, cycloid types of scales those shed easily. Two dorsal fins are present. Dorsal spines (total): 8-9; dorsal soft rays (total): 20-22; anal spines: 3; anal soft rays: 25-28.
