Description
Size: Maximum 45 cm; common to 25 cm

Color: Grayish on back, otherwise silvery, usually with 4 to 10 transverse series of dark spots, sometimes extending on soft dorsal, these series may be represented by dark narrow or alternating bands, more pronounced in young specimens, or the spots and crossbars are wanting and the color uniform.

Rhombic, much elevated, rostro-dorsal profile gently convex, with a slightly before dorsal fin, dorsal profile descending very steep from origin of dorsal to caudal peduncle. Height slightly more than length, head deep, strongly compressed, 2.8 to 3 in length, much higher than long. Eye 3 to 3.5 in head, situated near anterior profile in anterior half of head, far above mouth. Mouth protrusible; teeth pointed, slender, crowded together; a fringe of 4-6 short cirri ventrally on lower jaw (absent in specimen 25 cm or more in total length). Dorsal fin with 8 or 9 spines and 19 to 22 soft rays; fourth dorsal spine the longest, slightly shorter than head, soft dorsal strongly rounded. Anal fin with 3 spines and 17-19 soft rays. First anal spine minute, the third somewhat shorter than second, which equals about diameter of eye. Caudal rounded. Pectorals long, falci form, reaching base of caudal, ventrals with a strong spine, their first ray produced, reaching anal spines. For other characters see those of the subfamily.
