Description
Max. size: 86 cm TL.

Color: Varies with age. Juveniles are with black blotches and spots. In adults, the fish has three or four horizontal or longitudinal bands running across the body and the pectoral fins are yellowish white while the caudal fin is with black or brown spots.

It is a rather oblong and moderately deep-bodied fish. Lips fleshy, moderately swollen with age; chin with 6 pores but no median pit; gillrakers on first arch 30 to 35 (9 to 11 on upper limb 1 at corner and 20 to 23 on lower limb). The body is covered with ctenoid scales. Lateral line with about 65 tubed scales. Dorsal spines (total): 12 - 14, Dorsal soft rays (total): 17 - 21, Anal spines: 3, Anal soft rays: 7 - 8.
