Size: 90.0 cm SL (male)

Color: Back grey, shading to silvery on belly; faint dark dots in oblique series along scale rows occasionally. Spinous dorsal fin dusky in juveniles, but the outer margin only dusky in adults. Pectoral, pelvic and caudal fins yellowish; pectoral fins with a black blotch at axil.

Oblong body with rounded and projecting snout. Mouth is terminal/inferior. A pair of small, tapering barbels is present on chin. Teeth villiform and are differentiated in varied sizes. The teeth present in outer row in upper jaw are canniform while the inner row of lower jaw has large teeth. Dorsal fin has 9-10 spines followed by a deep notch. The 2nd part of fin has 1 spine and 23-26 soft rays. Anal fin has 2 spines and 7 soft rays. Its second spine is long and strong that measures nearly 1/2 of head length. Caudal fin is bluntly rhomboid. Body covered with cycloid scales in front of head while the rest of the body is covered with ctenoid scales.

Breeds in rainy season and winter season.
