Size: 48 mm.

Color: Yellow to orange. Iris greenish with golden margin of pupil. Head and anterior part of body with purple transverse lines, which may be present to below first dorsal fin. First line from eye to behind maxillary, second on preopercle, third on opercle, fourth behind gill opening or on gill membranes, fifth on base of pectoral fin. On body seven longitudinal rows of purple spots. Vertical fins with violet margin. A dark spot on upper part of operculum is often present.

Body compressed, oblong, height 2 1/2 in length, 3-3 1/3 in total length. Head obtuse, convex, 3 1/2 in length, 4 1/4-4 1/2 in total length, deeper than long. Eye 4-4 1/2 in head, interorbital 3/4-1 eye diameter. Snout obtuse, shorter than eye. Mouth curved, jaws sub equal. Maxillary extends to below anterior half of eye. Teeth in a few rows, outer row a little enlarged. In lower jaw on each side of symphysis a canine tooth. Gill opening extends to before the undermost ray of pectoral fin. Open pores round the orbital and on preopercle and opercle. Bases of dorsal fins continuous. First dorsal fin much lower than second dorsal fin, obtuse convex, the posterior rays are the longest. Second dorsal fin half as high as body, obtuse convex. Pectoral fin obtuse, rounded, as long as or a little shorter than head. Ventral fin a little shorter than postorbital part of head, basal membrane well developed. Anal fin similar to second dorsal fin. Caudal fin obtusely rounded, shorter than head.
