Size: 32-34 cm.

Color: Blackish green above, orange green below. Each scale with a dark spot, often forming longitudinal stripes on body. Fins orange, rays spotted with dark spots, forming bands. Base of pectoral fin with blackish spot. Head sometimes with a broad dark longitudinal stripe from snout to eye, some narrower radiating under eye.

Body anteriorly cylindrical, posteriorly compressed, height 4-5 in length, 5-6 1/2 in total length. Head pointed, depressed, 2 3/4 - 3 1/2 in length, 3 1/2 - 4 in total length. Profile above the eyes a little concave. Eye 5-5 1/2 in head, interorbital 1 eye diameter or more. Snout pointed, shorter than eye, or as long as eye, tip before upper half of eye. Anterior nostril in a very short tube. Lower jaw a little prominent. Maxillary extends to below posterior half or to below middle of eye. Teeth equal, small. Tongue rounded. Two or three longitudinal mucous canals on cheek. Supraopercular groove distinct. Scales of body ctenoid, those of head, nape and breast cycloid. Head scaled above from between the eyes, snout naked, cheek and opercle scaled. First dorsal fin obtuse, half as high as body, third ray is the longest. Second dorsal and anal fin a little higher than first dorsal fin. Base of pectoral fin scaled, pectoral fin about as long as head without snout. Ventral fin a little shorter. Caudal fin rounded, shorter than head. Elongated body shape. Dorsal spines (total): 7 - 7, Dorsal soft rays (total): 8 - 8, Anal spines: 1, Anal soft rays: 8.

Dioecism, external fertilization, guarders of eggs, probably has a pelagic marine larval stage.
