Size: 14-16.5 cm.

Color: In preserved specimens reddish brown, silvery below. Fins hyaline, traces of two longitudinal bands on anal.

Height 3.2-3.5, 4-4.3 in length with caudal. Head 3.2-3.5, 4-4.3 in length with caudal. Height of head, measured in vertical through hind border of preoperculum, half length of operculum less than length of head. Eye 3.1-3.4, equal to or slightly less than snout. Inter orbital space somewhat concave, 1.5-1.6 in eye. Mouth oblique, maxillary reaching to below pupil. Narrow bands of teeth in anterior part of jaws, with an outer series of somewhat larger ones. Four to six canines anteriorly in each ramus of the upper jaw, on canines in the lower jaw. Height of suborbital equal to vertical diameter of eye, its hind border forming a more or less straight line, which, when produced, reaches the dorsal profile about 6 scales before origin of dorsal. Preoperculum denticulate behind, the naked limb not quite twice as narrow as the scaled par. Dorsal spine rigid and pungent, their membrane scarcely emarginate. Fourth to tenth spines sud equal, longer than the anterior ones and equal to post orbital part of head. Soft dorsal rounded, somewhat higher than spinous part. First anal spine about half as long as second. Third spine slightly longer, equal to horizontal diameter of eye. Soft anal deeper than spinous part, but less deep than soft dorsal, rounded below, pointed behind. Pectorals somewhat shorter than head. Ventrals, with the first ray produced, slightly shorter than head without snout. Caudal forked. In three specimens from Malacca the upper caudal lobe id produced into a long filament. Least height of caudal peduncle 1.8-1.9 in its length.
