Description
Size: 38.8 cm.

Color: In alcohol brown, with an underlying silvery luster, head silvery, belly black, first dorsal black, with yellowish base and tip.

Height 5.6 to 6, head 4.3 to 4.5, rostro-dorsal profile sloping down from elevated base of first dorsal nearly in a straight line to point of snout, which projects somewhat beyond frontborder of mouth. Snout about equal to diameter of eye and 3.6 to 4 in head, the median tubercle not much pronounced, more so in young specimens. Eye circular, 3.3 to 4 in head, according to size of specimen, and slightly more than interorbital space. Mouth large, upper jaw reaching behind middle of eye, about 2.4 in head. Barbel equal to eye or only half its length. Suborbital ridge nearly wanting, suborbital area very narrow, about 4 times in eye. Branchial opening extends to below preopercular rim, which is vertical as also the hindmargin of preopercle, with rounded prominent angle. Villiform teeth in a broad band in upper jaw with the outer row considerably enlarged, lower jaw with a narrow band. Scales not very densely covered with about 15-30 sharp, conical, semierect spinelets, in a shallow, quincuncial arrangement, some of which project beyond the edge of the scale. Six or seven rows of scales between last ray of first dorsal and lateral line. Scales along edge of gillopening and immediately behind first dorsal, where they are enlarged, spineless. Anus immediately behind base of ventrals. Second dorsal spine serrate, two-thirds length of head. Interdorsal space about half length of head. Outer ventral ray not much prolonged and not much more than two-fifths of head, pectorals equal to postorbital part of head or longer, origin of first dorsal and pectorals in the same vertical, ventrals somewhat behind it.
