Description
Size: 12 mm

Color: In live specimens, the carapace and legs are red in color. Eyestalk has black stripes. Yellow longitudinal stripes are present on the walking legs. The tergal plates of the abdomen are also brightly colored as the carapace. Formalin preserved specimens appear yellow or orange.

Eyestalks shorter than the antennular peduncles, reaching half or more than half of the last segment of the antennular peduncle but as long as the anterior border of the carapace or as the antennal peduncle. Chelipeds equal, similar and their fingers opening and closing horizontally; the carpus and chela have the inner border serrulated and the outer surfaces including fingers with tubercles. Tufts of bristles arise from the bases of these tubercles. The merus has the upper and inner borders serrulate with tubercles on its outer surface. Second and third pairs of legs with dactylus longer than propodus by one-third to half.

This is the largest hermit crab occurring in Parangipettai waters. Fairly big sized specimens were collected from the shells of Xancus pyrum, Hemifuses pugilinus and Rapana bulbosa. Sea anemones were found on most of the shells inhabited by this animal.
