Size: Maximum 50 cm TL; common to about 30 cm.

Color: Light greyish-brown, lighter ventrally, darker on opercle, the lower surface of head and trunk white; lateral line pores white; posterior parts of dorsal and anal fins black. The lateral line has a row of whitish spots.

Body elongate and cylindrical, becoming narrower on tail which tapers to a point. Head large and snout. Mouth large with a single row of vomerine teeth (10-20). Dorsal fin origin above or slightly before pectoral fin base. Lateral line prominent. Vertebrae: 210, Head small. Skin soft, without scales. Anal fin inserted before middle of the body. Snout produced, depressed, 4 times in head. Cleft of mouth extending somewhat beyond the middle of the eye. Dorsal beginning above the base of the pectorals, anteriorly half as high as height of body or less, posteriorly somewhat higher. On the intermaxillary plate an irregular group of 8-10, behind which about 2 pairs of teeth, followed on the vomer by a series of very small teeth, which is anteriorly a single, posteriorly a double one, reaching as far as about the inner series of the maxillary teeth. Ventral distance of gill openings from each other equal to their width.
