Max. size: 150 cm SL

Color: Gray or brown on back, head light glossy purple, silvery below, fins yellowish with dark edges in adult. In young numerous irregular black spots on dorsal and caudal fins, head and back vertically banded.

Body shape elongate. Anterior dorsal profile nearly straight and posterior part highly convex, ventral profile straight. Snout convex, a median tubercle in a groove below mandibular symphysis. Two conspicuous pores on both sides. Opercle with two weak spines. No canines either in upper or lower jaw. Scales in anterior part of head cycloid, otherwise ciliate. Pectorals rounded, caudal rhombic. Lateral line arch similar to dorsal profile, anterior sensory tubes branched. 7-8 gill rakers on the lower limb of the first arch. Sagitta: oblong, the tail of the tadpole shaped impression abruptly bends after its origin. Swim bladder carrot shaped with 16-20 pairs of arborescent appendages, the Ist pair entering the head, the last 2 simple. Dorsal spines (total): 10 - 11, Dorsal soft rays (total): 22 - 25, Anal spines: 2, Anal soft rays: 7.
