Description
Max. size: 40.0 cm TL

Weight: 124 gm

Color: Silvery blue-green above and silvery white below. A distinct black blotch on upper margin of opercle, bordered above by a smaller white spot, caudal fin yellowish, upper lobe dusky to black distally.

Body is compressed and oblong with both the dorsal and ventral profiles smoothly curved. Eye diameter 3.5 to 4.0 times in length of head. Upper jaw (maxilla) reaching to below anterior third of eye. Teeth villiform, in a single series in jaws, with the exception that in some large specimens the teeth may be pleuriseriate anteriorly in upper jaw. Gill rakers 27 to 31 on lower arm of first arch. Two dorsal fins; first dorsal fin with a procumbent (forward pointing) spine (embedded in skin) and 8 normal spines; second dorsal fin with 1 spine and 23 to 25 soft rays. Anal and dorsal fin bases nearly equal in length. Anal fin with 2 detached spines, followed by 1 spine and 18 to 20 soft rays. Pectoral fins falcate. Caudal fin forked. Scales on body moderate; lateral line strongly arched anteriorly to below 2nd to 4th soft dorsal ray; 33 to 51 scutes.

Dioecious, external fertilization, spawning happens as one clear seasonal peak per year, eggs are pelagic.
