Description
Size: 40 cm SL

Color: Body silvery steel along back, lighter on sides and below. Dorsal and pectoral fin margins posteriorly dusky; adipose dorsal fin with a well defined black spot.

Elongate and robust body with depressed head. The snout is blunt and rounded. Eyes are large, 1.6 to 2.5 times in interorbital width. Shallow median fontanelle groove is present on top of head that is not reaching to the base of supra-occipital process. Supra-occipital process wider at its base than broad. Mouth is sub-terminal in position, its gape narrow. Three pairs of barbels are present. Villiform type of teeth is present in jaws; premaxillary tooth band continuous, about 4 times as long as broad; teeth on palate globular, forming two elliptical patches, one patch on each side, with a horn-like conical projection anteriorly. Dorsal and pectoral fins with strong pungent spines; tip of dorsal spine prolonged into a filament; pectoral spine shorter than dorsal spine; adipose dorsal fin small. Anal fin with 20 or 21 rays. Lateral line bifurcating at the base of tail. Gill rakers present on the hind aspect of all gill arches.
