Description
Size: Maximum 18 cm; common to 15 cm

Color: Back blue/green or brown with no dark median line, flanks silvery; dark venulose area on shoulder behind gill opening. Gill arches and inside of gill cover yellow or golden. Dorsal and caudal fins yellow with narrow dusky margins. Anal fin deep yellow at base, margin milky white, the two areas separated by a black band. Fins hyaline.

Body shape elongate and compressed. Belly with 23 to 26 keeled scutes (isthmus to anus). Tip of snout about level of upper rim of eye. Maxilla moderate, first supra-maxilla small, oval, jaw teeth small. Gill rakers on lower of first arch 17 to 19. Dorsal fin with 10 to 12 branched rays: a small, sharp spine before dorsal fin origin. Anal fin with 34 to 38 branched rays. Dorsal spines (total): 0 - 0, Anal spines: 0, Anal soft rays: 34-38. 18 gill rakers present on lower arm of first arch.
