Description
Size: Maximum 30 cm; common to 25 cm.

Color: Body silvery-greyish or tan dorsally and silvery white ventrally; 3 or 4 dark brown or black, downwardly curved longitudinal stripes on body. Spinous part of dorsal fin with a blackish band on upper portions of fin membranes between 3rd to 6th spines; soft part of dorsal fin with membranes between first 3 rays tipped with black and membranes between 5th to 7th rays entirely black; caudal fin with median rays pigmented; both caudal lobes with dark tips and a transverse band.

A small to moderate-sized fish with oblong, compressed and moderately deep body. Mouth is slightly oblique and its upper jaw (maxillary) reaches vertical through anterior pupil indicating an adult fish. In case of juveniles, the maxillary reaches vertical through front edge of eye. Teeth are conical, strong and slightly curved. The outer row of teeth is much enlarged. 14 gill-rakers are present on lower arm of first arch. Small and rough ctenoid scales cover the body. Lower opercular spine extending well beyond the opercular flap. Post temporal bone exposed posteriorly and serrate. Dorsal fin is notched. Dorsal spines (total): 11 - 12, Dorsal soft rays (total): 9 - 11, Anal spines: 3, Anal soft rays: 7-10. The caudal fin is slightly forked.

Dioecious, external fertilization, guarders, nesters. Breeds in late summer to rainy season.Occurs at a temperature range of 26.0-29.0 °C. Omnivorous; feeds on sand-dwelling invertebrates.
