Description
Size: 30- 40.0 cm TL (male/unsexed).

Color: Greyish to whitish below, head with scattered dark spots, jaws barred with darker; back and sides with 9 dark cross bars, those in front of dorsal, below tip of depressed dorsal fin, just in front of adipose fin and on caudal peduncle darker than others. Dorsal, pectoral and caudal barred.

Head 3.4-3.7 in standard length, 3.9-4.4 in total length. Depth of body 6.0-6.7 in standard length, 7.0-7.8 in total length. Eye diameter 6.0-7.3 in head, 1.4-1.7 in snout and equal to concave interorbital space. Teeth in jaws in irregular rows, canine like, unequal, depressible and the inner series largest. A narrow band of canine like teeth on palate. Tongue with numerous canine like teeth, short teeth on gill arches. Dorsal origin closer to adipose fin than to tip of snout. Pectoral fin slightly longer than snout and eye, reaching to 10th or 11th scale of lateral line. Ventral fin slightly shorter than head. 19-20 predorsal scales. Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: ii, 10-11; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: i, 8; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 11; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 7; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 59-62; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 5+1+9-10.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water/substratum egg scatterers.
