Description
Size: 50-120 cm.

Color: Back blue/grey; sides silver/white with upper part of body marked with a series of irregular, horizontal, narrow black lines breaking up into spots ventrally.

Height 5-5.45, 6-6.6 in length with caudal. Head 4.3-4.4, 5.2-5.4 in length with caudal. Eye 4.9-5.1, 1.4-1.5 in slightly convex inter orbital space, and 1.9-2 in snout. Mouth oblique. Upper jaw slightly prominent. Maxillary reaching to below hind border of pupil. Strong, compressed, pointed teeth in the jaws, those of the lower jaw some what stronger than those of the upper jaw. An elongate patch of villi form teeth on vomer, similar teeth in a narrow band on palatines, and in a patch on first basibranchial. Gill rakers on first arch 2 + 9, somewhat longer than half length of pupil. Origin of second dorsal halfway between base of upper caudal rays and eye. Second dorsal and anal falcate, the latter originating slightly behind the origin of the former. Longest dorsal rays about equal to head without snout. Pectorals equal to distance between gill opening and anterior nostril. Origin of ventrals below that of pectorals, ventrals much shorter than pectorals. Lateral line almost straight to below second dorsal finlet, abruptly bent downwards here and ending in a median ridge on caudal peduncle, which is very high. Interpelvic process small and bifid. Lateral line without auxiliary branches anteriorly, running almost straight below second dorsal finlet then slightly bent downward toward keel of caudal peduncle. Intestine with 2 folds and 3 limbs. Swim bladder absent. Body covered with small scales. First dorsal fin black posteriorly. Dorsal spines (total): 15-18, Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-19, Anal soft rays: 17-22, Vertebrae: 44-46.

Dioecious, external fertilisation, non-guarders, open water or substratum egg scatterers.
