Size: Length of the test (L) is 7-35 mm.

Color: Usually olive green with light tipped spines or blackish with red-tipped spines.

Forms small, oval in shape, long axis of test (shell) through ambulacrum I and interambulacrum 3. Only four pore pairs per arc. Primary spines stout and pointed. Tubercles imperforate and non-crenulate. Gills slits shallow.
