Size: 45 cm.

Color: Body dark olive brown dorsally, silvery below. Fins with a golden tinge.

Body shape elongated. Head moderate, concave between eyes, the latter projecting above this level. Eyes without adipose eyelids. Mouth distinctly ventral and protrusible. Teeth indistinct. Two widely separated dorsal fins; first fin with 4 spines, the second fin with 1 spine and 8 soft rays; first dorsal fin nearer to base of caudal fin than to tip of snout. Anal fin with 3 spines and 9 soft rays. Caudal fin slightly emarginate. Scales in lateral series 48 to 52.

Dioecious, external fertilisation, nonguarders, open water or substratum egg scatterers. Oviparous, eggs are pelagic and non-adhesive.
