Description
Size: 9-20 cm.

Max. weight reported: 750 gm

Color: Bluish green above and yellowish silver on the belly. Two rows of black spots on back below dorsal fin base from origin of first dorsal fin to caudal peduncle. 2 to 6 large spots at base of first dorsal fin, visible from above, two faint stripes at level of lateral line in some. A black blotch behind pectoral fin base. Outer margins of dorsal and pectoral fins dark.

Depth 5.2 in SL, 6.25 in TL; head 3.8 in SL, 4.45 in TL. Eye 4.1 in head. Body fusiform, its depth (at margin of gill cover) about 5.0 times in standard length. Head longer than body depth. Maxilla covered by lachrymal bone. Swim bladder present. Interpelvic process small and single. Anal spine rudimentary. Bristles on longest gill raker, 30 to 55 on one side. Gill rakers do not extend far into mouth; 20 to 25 rakers on lower arm of first arch. Teeth in a single series, minute and pointed in both jaws; absent on vomer and palatines. Scales small, ctenoid. Dorsal spines (total): 8 - 11, Dorsal soft rays (total): 12 - 12, Anal spines: 0, Anal soft rays: 12, Vertebrae: 31.
