Size: Maximum about 45 cm; common 20 to 30 cm

Color: Eyed side with a varying pattern of brown spots and blotches, but always a larger blotch on anterior end of straight part of lateral line and a smaller blotch halfway to caudal fin base.

Dorsal profile arched, strongly ascending above eyes, more convex than ventral profile. Height 1.8-2.1, 2.1-2.5 in length with caudal. Head 3-4, 3.7-4.7 in length with caudal. Eyes nearly equal, 4-4.2 in head, equal to snout, somewhat more than twice to more than thrice in postorbital part of head. Upper eye somewhat in advance of lower one, separated by a narrow bony ridge, the axis of which, when continued backwards, reaches the posterior part of the dorsal. Anterior nostrils, which are provided with a flap, placed somewhat higher than posterior ones. Maxillary with some deciduous scales on colored side, reaching almost to hind border of eye, 2-2.2 in head. Anterior teeth in upper jaw long, slender canines, diminishing in size posteriorly, were the teeth are more crowded. Eight to ten smaller canines in lower jaw, generally separated, sometimes more crowded. Tongue smooth. Origin of dorsal beginning on blind side, somewhat in advance of posterior nostril, a line through both reaches maxillary in its anterior half. All dorsal and anal rays simple, scaled. The anterior rays the shortest, the sub-posterior ones longest. Origin of anal before or below , in young specimens behind vertical through hind border of operculum. A short praeanal spine below skin. Dorsal and anal ending close to caudal, which is bluntly pointed. Scales ctenoid on colored side, cycloid on blind side, covering the head with exception of the snout. The forward prolongation of the lateral line reaches the dorsal profile at the 9th or 10th dorsal ray. Left pectoral equal to or longer, right pectoral shorter than postorbital part of head. Ventrals of equal length, equal to snout and eye. Nine compressed bluntly lanceolated gillrakers, dentated behind and less than half eye. Height of caudal peduncle equal to snout and eye.
