Description
Size: 25-35 cm.

Color: Body crimson, paler ventrally. Pelvic fins and membranes with purplish-black spots; other fins plain.

Somewhat elongate. Height about 3, 3.8 in length with caudal. Head 2.8, 3.7 in length with caudai. Eye 2.5. Snout (without lower jaw) three fifths of eye, interorbital space a little less than half eye. Mouth very oblique, lower jaw prominent. Maxillary reaching to below anterior part of eye, its width at posterior extremity one half of eye. Rather strong pointed teeth in a few rows in upper jaw, some of those near symphysis enlarged. Lower jaw with a single row of conical, somewhat curved teeth. A triangular patch of teeth on vomer, and rather smaller teeth in a single row on palatines. Praeorbital distinctly serrated along its upper and lower border. Praeoperculum serrated behind and below. A strong serrated spine, as long as pupil, at praeopercular angle. Origin of dorsal above base of pectorals. Dorsal spines gradually increasing in length posteriorly, the tenth somewhat longer than eye. Longest soft dorsal rays equal to longest anal ones and to eye and snout (without lower jaw). First anal spine not much shorter than second one, third one much stronger and longer, equal to eye. Dorsal spines feebly, anal spines distinctly serrated. Origin of anal in vertical through seventh dorsal spine. Pectorals half as long as ventrals, which are equal to head without lower jaw. Ventral spine feebly spinulose. Caudal crescentic, with the lobes produced. Least height of caudal peduncle about twice in its length and equal to postorbital part of head.
