Pampus chinensis   (Euphrasen,  1788) (Fish)
Organism information awaits expert curation
Class: Actinopterygii

Image copyrights: Gloerfelt-Tarp, T.

Size: 15-40 cm.

Color: Grayish to brownish dorsally, silvery white on sides. Covered in dark pigment spots. Fins silvery to grayish, darkest distally.

Body firm, very deep, compressed. Caudal peduncle short, deep, strongly compressed, lacking scute-like scales or fleshy keels. Snout is blunt, rounded, forehead almost straight. Eye is small, central, much shorter than snout. Mouth is small, sub terminal, curved downward posteriorly, not reaching anterior margin of eye. Upper jaw covered with skin, joined to head, not movable. Gill membranes joined to belly. Gill slit short, its lower margin slightly below pectoral-fin base. Scales very small, cycloid, and deciduous, barely extending onto fin bases. Naked patch on head and nape with well-defined network of longitudinal sensory canals, patch not extending above pectoral-fin base. Lateral line high, following dorsal profile onto caudal peduncle. Height 1.1-1.3, 1.4-1.6 in length with caudal. head 3.5-3.7, 4.4-4.9 in length with caudal. Eye with a narrow adipose eyelid, 3.6-3.8, equal to snout and 1.4-1.8 in the very convex inter orbital space. Maxillary reaching to below front border of eye. A row of slender, truncate teeth in the jaws, those of the upper jaw smaller than those of the lower. Dorsal rays rapidly decreasing in length to the tenth, more gently increasing in length to about the sixteenth, which equals the distance between snout and base of pectoral or nearly so. The following rays decreasing again in length, at first rather abruptly, then more gently, the last ray equaling eye. Hence the upper border of the dorsal is somewhat concave. Anal similar to dorsal, its origin behind that of dorsal. Pectorals pointed, equal to distance between snout and base of pectorals, in young ones the pectorals are less pointed and shorter. Caudal emarginate in young ones, slightly forked in adults. Dorsal spines (total): 0-0, Dorsal soft rays (total): 43-50, Anal soft rays: 39-42, Vertebrae: 33.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
