Size: 28-60 cm TL.

Color: Body color is silvery pink and edge of scales are red, opercular margin is black, all fins are red. Submarginal band is in each caudal fin lobe, leading edges of median fins are white.

Height 2.1-2.7, 2.7-3.5 in length with caudal. Head 2.5-3.2, 3.4-4.4 in length with caudal. Eye 2-2.5. Interorbital space twice or less in eye, 3.2-5 in length of head, comparatively narrower in older specimens than in young ones. Snout equal to or less than half eye. Maxillary reaching to below hindborder of eye or not so far, with or without denticulations near the posterior edge of its lower border, sometimes present at one side and absent in the other in the same specimen. Two groups of stout truncate teeth anteriorly on lower jaw near symphysis. Outer row of teeth of upper jaw enlarged and rounded, especially a group at same distance from symphysis. No teeth on tongue. Origin of dorsal separated by 7 to 9 scales from occiput. Third and fourth dorsal spine subequal, longer than the others, equal to eye or somewhat longer, less than twice as long as spine of second dorsal. Third anal spine stronger, but generally not much longer than fourth one, equal to eye or somewhat shorter. Pectorals longer than ventrals, about equal to head without snout. Ventral spine much longer than that of pectoral, equal to or longer than eye. Least height of caudal peduncle more than half eye. Gillrakers long, slender, numerous. Inner pectoral axil with numerous small scales. Dorsal spines (total): 11-11, Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-15, Anal spines: 4, Anal soft rays: 11-14.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water/substratum egg scatterers.
Nocturnal species. Feeds mainly on plankton such as crab larvae.
