Size: 21-27 cm.

Color: Back grey, sides silvery white, a brownish transverse band through eye and another from nape through base of pectoral to before anal. The tips of the dorsal and anal fin lobes are dusky to black. Pectoral pale, caudal pale yellowish. Juveniles dusky silver with 2 curved dark stripes across head.

The body of this diamond-shaped fish is strongly compressed and very deep. Head 2.7 in standard length, 3.6 in total length. Depth of body 1.2 in standard length, 1.55 in total length. Eye diameter 2.8 in head, 0.6 in snout and slightly less than convex interorbital space. Maxillary reaching below front border of eye. Preopercle angular. The dorsal and anal fins are small and inconspicuous. The pectoral fins are short and rounded and have 16 rays each. The large caudal fin is truncate to slightly emarginate. The body is covered with small, deciduous ctenoid scales which are arranged in 50-60 series along the lateral line. Dorsal spines (total): 7-8, Dorsal soft rays (total): 27-31, Anal spines: 3, Anal soft rays: 27-32. An active schooling fish that feeds on plankton and detritus.
