Megalops cyprinoides   (Broussonet,  1782) (Fish)
Organism information awaits expert curation
Class: Actinopterygii

Size: 30-150 cm.

Weight: 18.0 kg.

Color: Darkish blue-green dorsally, silvery below. Dorsal, caudal and upperpart of pectorals black, rest of fins hyaline.

Body is fusiform and compressed, with smooth, unkeeled belly. Mouth is superior; upper jaw extending almost to hind border of eye. Lower jaw prominent projects beyond snout, a bony gular plate present between the jaw bones. Last fin ray of dorsal long and filamentous, ventrally located pectoral fins, abdominal pelvic fins with 9 or more rays. Branchiostegals more than 23. Scales large. Maxillary reaches to a little before or somewhat behind hindborder of eye. Origin of dorsal misway between snout and base of caudal, or a little nearer to caudal, nearly twice as high as long, its upperborder concave and its last ray produced into a filament. Anal concave, much longer than dorsal. Ventrals below dorsal, their origin before that of dorsal and midway between anal and origin of pectorals. Villiform teeth on jaws, vomer, palatines, pterygoids and tongue. About 30 flattened gillrakers with the innerside spinulous, a third longer than branchial filaments, about 3/5 of eye. Dorsal spines (total): 0, Dorsal soft rays (total): 16-21, Anal spines: 0, Anal soft rays: 23-31. Predaceous, feeding mainly on fish and crustaceans (Refs. 5213; 10982). Breeds offshore in the sea, possibly throughout the year. Known to breath air, rising regularly to the surface to do so. The swimbladder is modified for this purpose. Cultured in ponds, the fry being sourced from the coasts. Utilized fresh and also for its roe.

Dioecious with external fertilization. Larvae are transparent and resemble larval eels, but with a forked tail.

Can tolerate oxygen-poor water by `breathing' air into a lung-like air bladder.

Age: 44 years.
