Description
Size: 15-21 cm.

Color: Silvery, back with about eleven grayish vertical stripes, interspersed with some yellow dots; fins hyaline, pectoral axil yellow with dark spot at base. Margin of soft dorsal grey, Posterior margin of caudal lobes black.

Oblong ovate, compressed, dorsal profile somewhat angulate, more convex than the ventral, the back strongly elevated behind occiput, nuchal spine longer than eye, keeled, height about 2, head more than 3 in length, its fronto-occipital profile deeply depressed. Eye about 3 in head, its diameter equal to snout or somewhat less and about equal to interorbital space. Two supraorbital spines, supraorbital edges entire. Prae-opercular angle obtuse. Lower margin of praeoperculum nearly straight and indistinctly serrated. Maxillary extends to below anterior third of eye. Mouth horizontal, when protracted forming a tube with downward direction, mandibula concave. Teeth minute, in upper jaw in a single series, in lower in villi form bands. Scales minute, wanting on head, on breast till pectoral and about middle of ventral of a special character: very thin, diaphanous, by superficial investigation giving the breast a naked appearance, lateral line with about 65 sensory tubes, terminating at base of caudal. Dorsal spines of moderate strength, the second elongate, terminally flexible and getting filiform, sometimes equaling height of body, the third and fourth spine serrated anteriorly. Second anal spine elongate and usually terminating filiform and flexible. Pectorals equaling head without snout, less than twice longer than ventrals, which do not reach anal. Caudal peduncle as high as long, the fin deeply incised with acute lobes. Deep bodied and vertical dark bars on upper sides. Long filament on dorsal spine . Silvery body. Naked head; with nuchal spine. Protracted mouth pointing downward. Thin scales on breast. 2nd dorsal spine is elongated. Dorsal spines (total): 8-8; dorsal soft rays (total): 16-16; anal spines: 3; anal soft rays: 14.

Breeds in rainy season.
