Description
Size: 8-11 cm.

Color: Silvery on abdomen, snout tipped gray, back with close-set irregular grayish markings, upper one-third of spinous dorsal bright orange and the rest of the dorsal below grayish, anal tipped orange, other fins hyaline and pectoral base black.

Body compressed, oblong, anteriorly ovate having 1/2 of its standard length. Abdomen before anal trenchant, with age increasingly more convex than opposite dorsal profile, form anal to caudal much less convex, dorsal profile in its rostro-frontal part ascending with a slightly concave line, behind occiput somewhat elevated, hence from spinous dorsal to caudal peduncle slightly convex, similar to opposite ventral profile. Height about 2 in length [2.5 in length with caudal]. Head 3.5 [4.3] in length, somewhat pointed. Eye nearly thrice in head, longer than blunt snout and about equal to inter orbital space, which forms an undeep triangular concavity bordered by the smooth supra orbital ridges, continued as outer border of the nuchal spine. This triangular spine is conspicuously grooved, has a median keel and is much longer than diameter of eye. Two more or less conspicuous spines above anterior border of eye, the upper rim of orbit behind them finely crenulated. Lower preopercular margin serrated. Commencement of gape of month somewhat above level of lower border of eye. Mandible almost straight. Mouth, when protracted, only slightly directed downwards. Minute teeth in a single series in jaws. Scales elliptical, small but conspicuous, covering the whole body, except head, lateral line less convex than dorsal profile, the sensory tubes conspicuous till about behind spinous dorsal, thence diminishing in size and regularity and terminating before end of dorsal. Second dorsal spine the longest, rather strong, somewhat curved, its length about twice in height of body, the following spine gradually decreasing in size. Second anal spine rather stronger but much shorter. Basal sheath of both fins with low interradial spines. Pectorals about equal to head without snout, ventrals equal to eye, with a long axillary scale. Caudal with spreading, pointed lobes. Snout is pointed, body ovate and compressed, ventral profile more convex than dorsal profile, post-orbital border distinctly concave. Nuchal spine present, head naked and breast with small scales, protracted mouth horizontal, lateral line extends only up to level of the posterior end of soft dorsal, ventral short reaching half way to anal.

Breeds in rainy season.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
