Size: 42-144 mm

Color: Uniform yellowish white. 6 to 9 bluish spots on cheek, opercle and base of pectoral. Fins yellowish. Tip of third dorsal spine black. Caudal and anterior part of anal with orange spots in live specimens, disappearing in preserved material.

Head 3.4-3.6 in standard length, 4.3-4.6 in total length. Depth of body 5.1-5.4 in standard length, 6.8-7.2 in total length. Eye diameter 4.8-5.3 in head, 1.4-1.6 in snout and 0.8 in interorbital space. Upper jaw with a single row of teeth, 3 to 5 in front of each side caninoid. Lower jaw with 2 rows of teeth in front and one row laterally, 5 or 6 enlarged teeth anteriorly on either side. Third dorsal spine longest, about one eye diameter shorter than head. Longest pectoral ray equal to head without snout. Ventral fin slightly shorter than pectoral fin.
Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: VI; number of spines and rays in the second dorsal fin: 12; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: I, 12; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 19-20; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the midside of body from the upper corner of operculum to the midbase of caudal fin in the absence of lateral line: 89-92; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 24-27.
