Description
Size: 9.7-60 cm SL

Color: Adults brownish gray, the body, posterior head, and dorsal fin with scattered large whitish spots and numerous pale spots, dorsal, caudal and pectoral fins with a very narrow white margin, a series of indistinct dark blotches at base of dorsal fin and one on caudal peduncle, prominent black streak on maxillary groove. Juveniles dark gray to black, covered with prominent pupil-size white spots and smaller white dots.

Height 2.8-3, 3.5-3.6 in length with caudal. Head 2.3-2.4, 2.8-3 in length with caudal. Eye 4.6-5, its diameter equal to or a little less than snout. Interorbital space about half diameter of eye. Mouth slightly oblique, lower jaw projecting. Maxillary reaching to below posterior border of eye, its width at distal extremity 1.5-1.8 in diameter of eye. Praeopercular border rounded, serrated behind, the serrae somewhat enlarged at angle. Middle opercular spine nearer to lower than to upper, the lower one not further back than upper, opercular flap pointed, its upper border curved. Head covered with cycloid scales, maxillary naked. Gillrakers short, 10-11 and some rudiments on lower part of anterior arch. Dorsal originating above base of pectorals. Dorsal spine increasing in length to the third or fourth, which are one third of head, the last spine is scarcely shorter, the soft rays are considerably longer. Second and third anal spine equal, much shorter than longest dorsal spines. Pectorals as long as postorbital part of head, ventrals half diameter of eye shorter. Caudal rounded. Scales ctenoid.
