Description
Size: 25-35 cm.

Color: Light greenish brown with brown hexagonal spots on head and body separated by whitish interspaces. Spots on lower sides somewhat rounded. A large black blotch below eight to eleventh dorsal spines extending on basal half of fin. Dorsal and caudal fins with brown hexagonal spots. Pectoral, ventral and anal with brown spots; soft dorsal, soft anal, pectoral and caudal with narrow white margin.

Head 2.4-2.6 in standard length, 2.9-3.1 in total length. Depth of body 3.2-3.4 in standard length, 4.0-4.5 in total length. Eye diameter 4.9-5.2 in head, as long as snout and about 0.6 in interorbital space. Maxillary reaching beyond a level from the posterior border of eye. Edges of preopercle finely serrated. Fourth or fifth dorsal fin spine longest, a little longer than last spine. Second anal fin spine subequal to third, and about equal to longest dorsal spine. Pectoral fin slightly shorter than postorbital part of head.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XI, 15; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: III, 8; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 17; number of spines and rays in the ventral fins: I, 5; number of scale rows along the midside of body from the upper corner of operculum to the midbase of caudal fin in the absence of lateral line: 90-95; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 10-12+1+28-34.

Protogynous, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water/substratum egg scatterers.
