Size: 18-30 cm.

Color: Body dark, iridescent blue above, silvery white below; pectorals and caudal fin greyish, other fins not pigmented. Juveniles with or without black bars.

Somewhat compressed, the breadth of the body going about 1.5 in its height. Height 5-5.7, 6.5-7.3 in length with caudal. Head 3.8-4, 5-5.3 in length with caudal. Eye 3-3.5, longer than snout, about 1.5 in postorbital part of head and about 1.3 in the somewhat convex interorbital space. No chinbarbel. Teeth very small and scarcely conspicuous. Origin of dorsal and anal opposite to each other or nearly so, that of dorsal separated by 17-20 scales from occiput. Pectorals reaching base of caudal or nearly so. Ventrals equal to or a little longer than postorbital part of head, their origin much nearer to tip of snout than to base of caudal. Caudal deeply forked. Branchiostegal rays: 9-11.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, oviparous.
