Size: 70.0 cm TL.

Color: Grey with dusky dorsal and caudal fins. Darker grey to yellowish lines along scale rows. Sometimes with blotched pattern that is showing intermittently.

Oblong-oval, dorsal and ventral profile about evenly arched, height 2.3-2.5 in length, head 3.5-3.7, short, about as long as high, rostro-dorsal profile canvex, somewhat swollen before inter orbital space, which is slightly convex and somewhat broader than diameter of eye, which goes thrice in length of head, the hind border of pupil is situated in middle of length of head. Preorbital entire, naked, at least in young. Preopercle with the lower border finely crenulated. Snout shorter than eye, maxillary reaching below front border of eye. Horizontal root of teeth in jaws, according to age, less than twice length of vertical part, fine teeth on vomer, palatines, pterygoids and tongue. Spinous dorsal somewhat shorter than or about equally long as soft, which is of about uniform height and slightly lower than highest middle spines, soft anal with a slightly concave border in its posterior half, the highest anterior rays about twice as high longest spine. Pectorals nearly 1.5 in length of head, shorter than ventrals. Caudal with shallow emargination, least height of its peduncle about equal to postocular part of head. Dorsal spines (total): 10-11; dorsal soft rays (total): 13-15; anal spines: 3; anal soft rays: 12-14.

Aggregate over hard, algal coated bottoms of exposed surf-swept outer reef flats, lagoons, and seaward reefs to a depth of at least 24 m. Found in exposed areas around rocky reefs.
