Color: Yellowish, gradually becoming whitish below, upper sides of head and top of snout dark; scales on sides of body with bluish black spots, a broad dark brown band from first dorsal spine through eye to lower margin of interopercle. Dorsal yellowish white, tip of anterior spines dusky, posterior part of spinous dorsal and anterior 2/3 of soft dorsal with narrow black submarginal line and narrow white outer border. Lower border of anal fin with broad black margin and submarginal yellowish band. Caudal, pectoral and ventral yellowish hyaline.

Eye diameter 3.1-3.3 in head, about 1.2 in snout and about equal to convex interorbital space. Lateral line arched, terminating below end of dorsal. Dorsal fin spines increasing in length to the fourth or fifth, it being longest, posterior spines slightly shorter. Second anal fin spine stronger and longer than the third. Pectoral fin shorter than head, ventral fin equal to or slightly longer than pectoral.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XIII-XIV, 20-22; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: III, 16-17; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 15; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the midside of body from the upper corner of operculum to the midbase of caudal fin in the absence of lateral line: 37-41; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 8+15-16.

Oviparous, dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water/substratum egg scatterers. Distinct pairing.

Erects the dorsal spines and faces downwards in a defensive position when approached by divers and other fishes. Basic coloration does not change throughout its lifetime.
