Description
Max. size: 20 cm

Color: Yellowish with a black band edged white from front of dorsal through eye to interopercle, united with the one from the other side only on nape, six dark lines from behind upper part of opercle obliquely upwards towards dorsal and from the lowest of the above lines 11 dark lines directed downwards and backwards to anal and caudal peduncle. Dorsal and anal fins blackish especially posteriorly with clear outer margin for soft portions of both fins; the blackish color extending on to the posterior part of body as a broad vertical band. Caudal yellowish. Pectoral yellowish; ventral pale.

Body is compressed and somewhat rounded. Head 2.7 in standard length, 3.2 in total length. Depth of body 1.7 in standard length, 2.0 in total length. Rostro-dorsal profile steeply ascending, snout slightly concave. Eye diameter about 3 in head, 0.9 in snout and 0.8 in interorbital space. Gape of mouth slightly above a level of the lower border of eye. Lateral line strongly arched, ending below posterior rays of dorsal. The fins include a single continuous dorsal of 12-13 spines and 23-26 rays, an anal fin of 3 spines and 19-22 rays and a rounded caudal. The spinous dorsal base is longer than the soft dorsal base. The mouth is terminal and protruding and bears fine bristle-like teeth in both jaws.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XIII, 25; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: III, 22; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 16; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the midside of body from the upper corner of operculum to the midbase of caudal fin in the absence of lateral line: 31; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 6+16.

Oviparous, monogamous, dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water/substratum egg scatterers. Distinct pairing. Stable monogamous pairs with both pair members jointly defending a feeding territory. Pelagic larvae settle to shallow (<4 m) back reef habitats consisting of rubble, seagrass and low coral cover.
