Description
Size: 23.7 cm.

Color: In preserved specimens brownish red, somewhat lighter below. Head uniform or with traces of a few white lines form eye to snout. Scales of body with a more or less distinct vertical dark brown stripe. According to Cuvier and Valenciennes and Bleeker there is a dark band from eye to caudal, but in the type of notophthalmus this band is not visible and in another specimen it is only distinct on the caudal peduncle, where it ends in a dark blotch. Dorsal and anal whitish, freckled and striped with brownish. A dark brown blotch between the first and second and between the second and third dorsal spines. Caudal with faint brownish vertical bands. Spines and rays of vertical fins more or less greenish. Ventrals dusky at base. Pectorals hyaline.

Height 3.1-3.2, 3.8 in length with caudal. Head 2.5-2.8, 3-3.3 in length with caudal. Height of head 1.4-1.5 in its length. Upper profile of head somewhat concave above eyes. Eye 4.8-6.2, 1.7-2.6 in snout and 1.1 in somewhat convex inter orbital space. Mouth somewhat oblique. Maxillary reaching nostril. Conical teeth in a single series in both jaws, two curved canines anteriorly in upper jaw, two smaller ones anteriorly in lower jaw. Preopercle smooth, with two transverse rows of scales, leaving a broad inferior and a narrow posterior limb naked. Six rows of scales before dorsal. First dorsal spines equal to or slightly shorter than eye, last spine as long as snout or somewhat shorter, as long as longest dorsal ray. The membranes between the dorsal spines slightly incised. First anal spine somewhat shorter than eye. Third spine slightly longer than last dorsal spine. Soft anal similar to soft dorsal, rounded. Pectorals and ventrals sub equal, as long as snout. Caudal slightly rounded.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
