Description
Size: 18-23 cm.

Color: Yellowish brown with seven dark transverse bands. Spinous dorsal pale brown with dark brown edges. Soft dorsal, anal and caudal pale brownish. Pectoral yellowish with basal triangular black spot. Ventrals grayish.

Head 2.9-3.2 in standard length, 3.9-4.2 in total length. Depth of body 1.8-1.9 in standard length, 2.3-2.4 in total length. Mouth oblique. Maxillary reaching to below space between nostrils and eye. Eye diameter 3.4-3.8 in head, 1.2-1.4 in snout and 1.3-1.5 in interorbital space. Teeth uniserial in jaws, truncate. Suborbital scaly. Scales not reaching nostrils. Three rows of scales on preopercle, inferior and posterior limbs naked. None of the opercles serrated. Scales on head not reaching nostrils. Pectoral fin equal to head. Ventral fin as long as pectoral. First dorsal spine equal to eye or somewhat shorter, 6th to 8th dorsal spines subequal, longest, and equal to snout and eye together in young ones, half diameter of eye shorter in adults. Soft dorsal higher than spinous part, the median rays longest and equal to head without snout. First anal spine less than half length of second, which is as long as longest dorsal spines. Soft anal similar to soft dorsal. Caudal forked, the lobes moderately pointed. Four scales between lateral line and scaly sheath of dorsal below last spine.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: XIII, 13; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, 12-13; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 16; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 20-21+7-9; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 3 ½ +1+11-12.
