Size: 15.0 cm TL (male)

Color: Dark brown, snout and thorax yellowish white; three white transverse bars on head and body, the first from nape across opercle, the second from last two dorsal spines and first two or three anterior rays of soft dorsal to anus and origin of anal fin, the third on caudal peduncle. Dorsal dark brown except the last two dorsal spines and first tow or three rays, these being white, anal pale to yellowish, ventral yellowish to dusky. Pectoral yellowish, base dark brown. Base, distal and outer edges of caudal white, central portion dusky brown.

Head 3.1-3.2 in standard length, 4.1-4.2 in total length. Depth of body 2.0-2.1 in standard length, 2.5-2.6 in total length. Eye diameter 2.4-2.5 in head, 0.6 in snout and 0.9 in interorbital space. Teeth in a single series in either jaw. Preopercle finely serrate behind. Opercle, subopercle and interopercle strongly serrated. Pectoral fin shorter than head. Ventral fin slightly longer than head.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: X, 16; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, 13-14; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 17-18; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 40-41; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 6+1+20.

Protandrous, external fertilization, guarders, nesters.

Associated with the anemones: Heteractis aurora, Heteractis magnifica, Macrodactyla doreensis, Stichodactyla haddoni, and Stichodactyla mertensii.

Has been reared in captivity.
