Size: 11.5-13 cm.

Color: Pinkish with indistinct dark blotches above and behind pectoral and at origin of soft dorsal. In life red, often with a lighter ocellus above pectoral, and with dark, irregular blotches on head, body, and tail.

Head 1.9 in standard length, 2.4 in total length. Depth of body 1.7 in standard length, 2.2 in total length. Eye diameter about 6.7 in head, equal to snout and 1.5 in interorbital space. First dorsal spine slender, equal to curved second spine in length, with bulbous tip consisting of tentacles. A smooth pit behind second spine. Two posterior dorsal rays forked. First anal ray simple, others forked. Inner ray of ventral fin deeply forked. Dorsal and anal fins attached very close to base of caudal fin. Skin rough, covered with small denticles, those on upper part of head, on second and third dorsal spines and on first dorsal ray prominent. Cutaneous filaments present on sides of head and body.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: 1+1+1+12; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: 7; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 10; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: 5.

Dioecious, oviparous, external fertilization, non guarders of eggs. Eggs are bound in ribbon-like sheath or mass of gelatinous mucus called 'egg raft' or 'veil'.
