Description
Size: 39-51 cm.

Color: Back bluish, turning to deep purple or almost black on the head; a pattern of 15 or more narrow, oblique to nearly horizontal, dark wavy lines in the scaleless area above lateral line; belly white; pectoral and pelvic fins purple, their inner sides black. Bluish above, dark on head, pale or light brow below. Above and behind the corselet oblique black bars present.

Head 3.2 to 3.8; depth 3.9 to 4.5 in standard length. Snout 3.62 to 4.0 and eye 5.0 to 5.8 in head. Body robust and a little laterally compressed. Mouth oblique. Teeth in both jaws minute and in single series. Palatines edentulous and vomers sometimes with scattered teeth. Two dorsal fins, the first with 10 to 12 spines, separated from the second by a large interspace (at least equal to length of first dorsal fin base), the second fin followed by 8 finlets. Pectoral fins short, but reaching past vertical line from anterior margin of scaleless area above corselet; a large single-pointed flap (interpelvic process) between pelvic fins. Anal fin followed by 7 finlets. Caudal widely forked, peduncle with poorly developed lateral keel. A strong central keel on each side of caudal fin base between 2 smaller keels. Air-bladder absent. Scales only on corselet. Corselet short, abruptly tapering as narrow band on lateral line.

Trematodes, namely Hexastoma auxidi, Didymozoan auxis, etc., a cestode Callitetrarhynchus gracilis and the copepod species of the genus Caligus are found parasitic on this frigate mackerel.

Sexes are separate.
