Description
Max. length: 26.0 cm SL (male/unsexed)

Color: Head almost black, body dark brown. Caudal fin white; other fins blackish except produced rays which are lighter.

Body elongate and compressed. Depth of body about 6 in standard length. Head 3.5 in standard length. Snout depressed, rounded, with a median intermaxillary notch. Eye minute, above the middle of maxilla. Nostrils superior, far in front of eye. Maxillary nearly two thirds in head. Teeth in villiform bands in jaws and in a small patch on each side of vomer. Dorsal fin origin behind base of ventral fin and nearer to the tip of snout than to the base of caudal fin. Origin of anal fin below hind rays of dorsal fin. Outer rays of ventral fin reaching to basal third of caudal fin. Upper two rays of pectoral fin detached, filamentous, almost reaching to upper lobe of caudal fin; lower five rays of pectoral fin free. Caudal fin deeply forked; the lower two rays prolonged with spatulate tips. No notch in the ventral outline at the base of lower caudal fin rays.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: 13; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: 11; number of rays in the pectoral fin: 2+6+5; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: 8; number of scale rows along the midside of body from the upper corner of operculum to the midbase of caudal fin in the absence of lateral line: about 55; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 7+8.

Synchronously hermaphroditic.
